This chawan is glazed in a milky white over a peach-toned clay, the two blending into the loquat-like shades of pink, apricot, and cream that tea people call biwa-iro. A fine crackle runs through the glaze, and broad wheel marks spiral both inside and out, ending in a gentle whirl at the bottom of the well.

The bowl is full of small, natural details: an irregular rim with a few gentle dips where the clay settled as it was thrown, a sturdy trimmed foot touched with drips of glaze, and on one side a dark burst where a grain of stone in the clay erupted during firing, a feature collectors call ishihaze. The rim rises and dips slightly as it travels around, the wheel marks wander, and the glaze thins and thickens across the body. Before each use, rinse or briefly soak the bowl in warm water; this helps prevent staining and lets the clay settle.
