In a traditional tea gathering, the host sets the bowl down with its front facing the guest. The guest admires it, then turns the bowl slightly before drinking, so as not to drink from the front. It's a small gesture of humility and respect for the bowl and its maker.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn a painted bowl like this one, choosing the front is part of the pleasure. The tall turquoise band crossing the iron branches makes a natural shōmen, but turn the bowl and the other faces offer quieter compositions of drips and scattered dots.
