Special Selection Premium Ceremonial Matcha – Samidori (Muku 20g Tin)
Single Cultivar | First Harvest | Shade-Grown | Stone-Ground
Soft, luminous, and completely clean — Muku (無垢) means "pure" or "unadorned," and the name is the whole review. This first harvest, shade-grown ceremonial matcha is single-cultivar Samidori from one small field, with no sharpness, no astringency, and nothing to hide behind. What's left is sweetness, cream, and a quiet floral lift.
Stone-milled in small batches, the powder is startlingly fine and a deep, even green. The body is silky rather than heavy — it coats the palate without weighing it down, then finishes clear. If Kōyō is the ocean, Muku is the meadow: gentle, green, and effortlessly easy to return to.
Flavor: Fresh cream, clover, white flower
Texture: Silken and creamy without heaviness, very clean finish
Color: Deep, luminous green
Grown in Ujitawara, Kyoto Prefecture, on a 7th generation family-run tea farm, from a single small field of Samidori shaded for 26 days before picking. The long shading and deliberately low yields build the sweetness and density that define this cultivar, and the whole field is harvested as one lot each spring.
Yuta harvests his fields only once per year, minimizing stress on the tea plants to ensure the highest quality ichiban each season — the reason a matcha this soft still carries this much depth.
Usucha (Thin Tea): Whisk 1–2 tsp with 2–3 oz water at 160–170°F for a creamy, gently sweet bowl.
Koicha (Thick Tea): Knead 1.5–2 tsp with 1–1.5 oz hot water — Muku thickens beautifully and stays smooth, with no bitterness at the finish.
Food Pairing: Wagashi, shortbread, or anything mild enough to let the floral notes through.
Muku is forgiving. Slightly hot water or a rushed whisk won't turn it harsh, which makes it an unusually good cultivar to learn koicha on.
Samidori is the cultivar Uji built its reputation on — selected here, grown here, and prized for its balance of sweet umami and creamy body. It is the backbone of most top-grade Uji matcha.
Almost all of it disappears into blends, where it rounds out sharper cultivars. Tasting it alone, unblended, is rare — and it turns out Samidori has plenty to say on its own.
This is the matcha for those who want purity, not intensity.
Muku comes from a single field with a very small annual allocation — once the season's lot is gone, it's gone until next spring.
