Why Uji

For over eight centuries, the hills of Uji, Kyoto have been home to Japan’s most celebrated matcha. Here, in the birthplace of the tea ceremony, fertile soil, morning mists, and centuries of cultivation knowledge combine to create flavors found nowhere else in the world.

In Ujitawara, generations of farmers—some stretching back six and seven generations—tend their tea fields with quiet dedication. Their families have refined the art of shade-growing, hand-picking, and stone-grinding, passing down both skill and spirit through the years.

These are not just producers; they are guardians of a living heritage. Through close partnership with these growers, Origin Uji is able to share small-batch matchas that are rarely seen outside of Japan—teas once reserved for local markets, temples, and tea masters.

To honor this craft, we also collaborate with a Level 10 Tea Master—one of only a handful across Japan—whose rare expertise ensures that even our daily blends carry the depth, balance, and character worthy of Uji’s name.

From Our Farms to Your Cup

Based in Ujitawara, Kyoto, we work directly with Japan’s most skilled tea artisans to craft and package matcha in small weekly batches. Each shipment is air-freighted to the U.S. to preserve its peak freshness—ensuring that what reaches your cup is as vibrant as the day it was milled.
