Shigaraki Chawan – Copper Red
One of One | Handmade in Shigaraki | Unglazed Foot | Ships from Kyoto
A deep oxblood red pools and breaks across this Shigaraki chawan, shifting from bright cinnabar at the rim to near-black crimson in the shadows. The glaze carries fine speckling and subtle mottling that catches the light differently from every angle — no two views of this bowl are quite the same.
The unglazed foot reveals the pale Shigaraki clay beneath, finished with a soft crackled white slip where body meets glaze. Generous in the hand and beautifully balanced, this is a chawan made to be used — for your daily bowl of usucha or simply as a quiet presence on the shelf.
Origin: Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, Japan
Dimensions: cm × cm H
Weight: g
Clay: Shigaraki stoneware, unglazed foot
Glaze: Copper red (辰砂), high-gloss with natural mottling and speckle
Condition: New, handmade — surface variation, glaze pooling, and small kiln marks are inherent to the piece
Shigaraki is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, with over 700 years of continuous pottery tradition. Its local clay — coarse, warm, and rich in feldspar — has made the region beloved by tea practitioners since the Muromachi period.
Wabi-cha tea masters prized Shigaraki ware for its unpretentious, earthy character. This bowl continues that lineage: honest materials, a steady form, and a glaze that rewards close attention.
Hand wash with warm water and a soft cloth. Avoid dishwashers, microwaves, and abrasive scrubbing. Dry fully before storing.
With regular use, the glaze will develop a gentle patina over time — a welcome mark of a well-loved chawan.
This is the exact bowl photographed. Every piece in our ceramics collection is one of a kind — once sold, it will not be restocked.
