Shigaraki Katakuchi – Turquoise Tide
One of One | Handmade in Shigaraki | Spouted Bowl | Ships from Kyoto
Shallow seawater meeting white sand. This Shigaraki katakuchi (spouted bowl) carries a band of satin turquoise that deepens toward cobalt at the foot, rising into a speckled, snow-white upper half. Where the two meet, the turquoise thins into soft green and frosted aqua, like a wave easing back from the shore.
Inside, the bowl is glazed entirely in that matte, speckled white, flecked with warm iron spots from the clay. The pulled spout is clean and generous, and the glaze even flows inside the foot ring, a small finishing touch you notice only when you turn the bowl over.
We selected this piece in person in Shigaraki.

Tea practitioners judge matcha by eye before the first sip. Color says a lot: a vivid, jade green points to careful shading and fresh, well-stored tea, while dull or yellowish tones suggest the opposite. A pale interior is the most honest stage for that color. Nothing competes with the green, so you see the tea exactly as it is.
That makes this bowl a natural partner for a high-grade ceremonial matcha. Whisk it here and the bright green foam sits against speckled white like moss on stone, with the turquoise outside framing the whole picture.
The katakuchi form lets you whisk directly in the bowl and then pour cleanly over milk or ice for lattes. It also works as a yuzamashi for cooling water before brewing gyokuro or sencha, or as a bright serving bowl on the table.
Hand wash with warm water and a soft cloth. Avoid dishwashers, microwaves, and abrasive scrubbing. Dry fully before storing.
Matte white glazes can take on faint tea tones over years of regular use. Rinse soon after whisking to keep the interior bright, or let it develop a gentle patina of its own.
